You may be 40 years old, but could your brain already be showing signs of accelerated aging? New research involving more than 18,000 people suggests that the answer may depend on much more than genetics or your date of birth.

aging faster than expected.

Ordinary forgetfulness does not automatically indicate accelerated brain aging.

For example, occasionally misplacing keys, forgetting a name, or struggling to concentrate after a poor night’s sleep can occur for many reasons.

Stress, depression, medications, sleep deprivation, and nutritional deficiencies may influence cognitive performance.

However, persistent or progressive cognitive changes deserve medical attention.

Examples include:

Frequently forgetting important recent events.
Increasing difficulty following familiar instructions.
Becoming disoriented in familiar places.
Significant changes in language or problem-solving abilities.
Difficulty managing everyday activities that were previously routine.

These symptoms do not establish a diagnosis by themselves.
