and all important papers were safeguarded. Jason, meanwhile, never went to visit her. Not once.
The return to the empty home
The next morning, Linda decided it was time to go to the hospital. Not out of remorse, but to pressure Claire to say that it had all been “an accident.” Jason accompanied her.
When they opened the door of the room, they stopped in their tracks. The bed was empty. Claire’s belongings were gone. A nurse came over and handed Jason an envelope. Inside, a single line: “You should hurry to get home.”
Seconds later the phone rang. It was the building manager, with an unusually serious tone: they had to return immediately.
The law enters the scene
When they arrived, two policemen were waiting in the lobby next to the administrator. Jason tried to impose himself by claiming that it was his apartment, but he was calmly corrected:
